Cat-Hooded Cowl…

Every wish of my little niece is my command! This is what I said to myself when she started pointing a picture on a crochet magazine I was reading. She got excited by one of those hooded cowl with animal ears on top which I think look very funny and cute especially on babies, who are cute, sweet and funny by their own. Despite her mum always telling me I am spoiling the baby too much, I instantly took the chance to crochet it as a Christmas gift for her. Since she loves cats I wanted to make this gift more personal, crocheting cat ears on top of the hood and a little nose and whiskers on the cowl. This is the final result and…oops it looks like I have to make some presentations first…Ladies and gentlemen I am honored to introduce to you my model Cicciobello doll, wearing this beautiful cat-hooded cowl!!!

Before starting your project the only thing you should know is the head circumference of the person who is going to wear the hoodie. If you have the chance to take this measure directly, it would be perfect, if not (like always happens to me) you can follow the measures below. My niece is two years old so I considered a head size of 50 cm.

0-1 year : 45 cm

1-2 years : 50 cm

3-10 years : 53 cm

Women : 56 cm

Men : 60 cm

To make the hoodie, I’ve used 2 skeins of yarn (200 gr) in a dark blue color and a 6 mm hook. You also need a small amount of white yarn, a needle and a pair of scissors. We are going to work three different pieces to be assembled , the cowl and two squares for the hoodie.

Stitches used

sc : single crochet

dc : double crochet

COWL

Make a foundation chain as long as the head circumference you got from the table. It took for me 60 chains to reach a total length of 50 cm. Then join to the first stitch with a slip stitch to form a circle making sure your work doesn’t twist.

Row 1-end : ch 2 (it counts as the first dc), dc in each stitch around. Sl St into the second chain.

You are going to repeat row 1 until you reach the desired height of your cowl. I repeated it 7 times for a total height of 15 cm. Then fasten off your yarn thread.

HOODIE

Make a foundation chain equal to the half number of the chains crocheted for the cowl. In my case for the cowl I crocheted 60 chains, so now for the hoodie I made 30 chains.

Row 1: ch2 (it counts as the first dc), dc in each stitch across.

Row 2-end : ch2 and turn your work. Dc in each stitch across.

You are going to repeat row 2 until you have a square shape. Make another square in order to have two pieces to form the hoodie.

EARS

For the ears we are going to work 4 triangles, 2 with the blue color for the outer part of the ears and 2 with the withe yarn for the inside part.

Ch 7

Row 1 :ch 1, 2 sc joined together in the next 2 stitches, sc in each stitch. (6 st)

Row 2: ch 1 and turn your work, 2 sc joined together in the next 2 stitches, sc in each stitch. (5 st)

Row 3: ch 1 and turn your work, 2 sc joined together in the next 2 stitches, sc in each stitch. (4 st)

Row 4: ch 1 and turn your your work, 2 sc joined together in the next 2 stitches, sc in each stitch. (3 st)

Row 5: ch 1 and turn your work, 2 sc joined together in the next 2 stitches, sc in each stitch. (2 st)

ASSEMBLING

hoodie3Start joining the two squares for the hoodie. Put the two pieces one on the other and sew them along the two sides as it is shown in the picture below.

Once you’ve sewn 2/3 of the upper part of the hoodie, fold inside what is left and it will look like 4 layers to be joined, keep sewing them also. In the lower part of the hoodie we are going to attach the cowl. Once you’ve finished sewing, turn inside out your hoodie and voilà, here is the result.

hoodie5Assemble the two ears by sewing the white part on the blue one and sew them on the hoodie. For the little nose, whit the white yarn, in a magic ring make 6 sc joined with a sl st and sew it in the center of the cowl. For the whiskers insert your needle in the nose from the back and insert it further, the first time following a diagonal direction, then horizontally, then again diagonally. Always remember to pass by the center of the nose every time you change direction. Repeat it on the other side of the nose.
